Accountability through Enforcement
We push for strong legal frameworks on business and human rights in the U.S. and around the world
When corporations prioritize profits over people and the planet, communities around the world pay the price. We need strong laws in place that ensure justice and respect for the well-being and environments of communities around the world by requiring corporations to prioritize what really matters.
While United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct provide a roadmap for how companies can engage in business responsibly, robust legal frameworks are required to make voluntary commitments mandatory. Laws that require companies to conduct human rights due diligence and give communities impacted by violations in corporate supply chains an opportunity for justice are necessary for ensuring that human rights and the environment are protected.
We advocate for enacting human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) laws in the United States. The FCPA for Human Rights extends the framework of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) to human rights abuses in US supply chains.
We work with global partners to develop internationally agreed upon best practices for HREDD laws. The Global Initiative for Corporate Accountability (GICA) promotes law and policy reform to advance corporate accountability worldwide.
